Each optical sensor has one small plastic "tower". The tower transmits and receives a beam of infrared light to the bottom of keys. As the keys move it gradually changes the intensity of the amount of light detected. The sensor strip is mounted to the key frame, positioned so that the bottom of each key reliably reflects the light. Since it is optical absolutely nothing effects the touch of the key.

The travel of the key is not restricted by using the sensor strip each key still has the same range of motion it had before.
