I am also concerned if Knight spare parts will be available in future as I understand Knight is no more producing pianos - What a pity ! I'd deeply appreciate your help in tracing the year of make of this beauty with Serial No.64972. Thanks a million.

comment: My piano was delivered this morning, and I have noticed a couple of things on which I'd be grateful for some information. The first is that the piano seems to have 2 serial numbers. Both are 4-digit. The first is 8844, and the second, directly underneath the first, is 6633. Have you any idea why this is? Could one be the importer's Robert Cocks & Co) number rather than the manufacturer's? The other is that inside the piano is a small metal plaque, which says "Legato-System von Friedrich Kaiser, Freiburg i/B. Patentirt in den Meisten Staaten", and gives a number - 820. What is/was the Legato- System, and who was Friedrich Kaiser? Thanks very much for your help.

comment: I'm looking for any information about this beautiful piano, especially the age, and any information about the maker. The number 8601 is burned into the wood behind the knee panel, next to the cast iron (?) frame. The case appears to be a burl walnut veneer with a floral design inlaid in the center upper panel with carved scrollwork and four holes in each of the upper side panels that may have held sconces. The music stand folds and swings out from behind the upper panel. All keys operate, although they don't all rebound with vigor, and the sounding board appears to be in great shape. A sticker on the side, probably from the exporter, says HS, Herbert Sutcliffe, Ing Hey (?), Briarcliff, Burnley, Lancashire, England. Telephone and Cable Address Burnley 24225 and 31412. Stock No. 090694. Can anyone tell me anything about any of this? Thanks, Albert Shields.

comment: I should be grateful if you could let me know anything you can about my piano! Its an upright piano, with 2 pedals. Understrung, I believe. The makers name is down as Lehmann & Kaiser, Dresden, but I can find no record of them. The number 11213 is burnt into the inside of the back panel of the piano. The piano is made chiefly of walnut, and it has a very distinctive design on the top door. Each of the 3 squares on the front of the door depict flowers, with mother-of-pearl inlaid insects/butterflies.

comment: Very good site. I used the old Pianos for Sale site to find my Ibach. But the new Pianos for Sale site is a mess on my computer making it impossible to see all the fields about a particular piano on a single screen. I am using IE with Win2k. But thanks for the excellent material on the rest of your site.

=================================================

Sorry you could not see the pages as intended we are aware that IE 5.00 has a problem with the CSS on that page and other pages, also Netscape has a problem with logging in. However, we have to move on IE 5.00 is out dated.

The whole site is also moving over to XHTML this page is now XHTML which may give more problems to some of the older browses However, only a small percentage of visitors now use the older browses and since it is free to upgrade I would recommend upgrading to IE6.00

The keyboard lid gives the make as "British Piano Company" but I have been informed that it is in fact a "Spencer" make which were owned by the British Wood Co. It has a walnut case, brass sconces, wooden pedals and horizontal tuning pins. It does not have "carrot legs". Please inform me of your thoughts on age circa 1890? and comments on maker. Serial No: 16686/1 2 brass handles to the sides. 2 brass candle holders key board, these are fixed but are able to be swiveled left or right. Tan coloured timber with darker solid timber edging in pie crust design. Turned post type front legs. Ivory keys(1 damaged).3 hammers missing. Impressed into timber inside the back is the name P. Vidal. Lid to keyboard has lock but no key. General condition we believe is average.

Please delete it from your 'for sale' section, assuming you can find the advert - I can't.

Your add was deleted when we upgraded that page to the new one. However, the site is indexed by Goggle very quickly but it can take up to 2 - 3 months before Goggle drops the pages form its "Cached Pages" one of the advantages or disadvantages of being a popular site depending how you look at it.

Sorry if you have been inconvenienced, But at least you sold the piano.

On the inside of the keyboard cover is written in gold: "Morton Bros & Co., London". We would like to know if this is the name of the maker of the piano, or the seller, and from approximately when it dates. I have been unable to find anything on this name in searches. I hope you can help! Thank you.

It also says it was manufactured expressley for H. Taylor. It has an unusual sound, something like you here in old westerns. I was wondering were I might look for more information on this piano and approximate value. Thank you,Debbie

comment: I just aquired this piano that has been in the family for many years, mostly because nobody had room for it. My husband and I decided to refinish it, fix it up, and get the girls lessons. My mother then informed me that it is an antique. I decided to find out more information before we did anything to it. I know that it was made by The Cable Co. from Chicago,is a Kingsbury, and the number 162995 is stamped on it. It has been battered and beaten by the grandchildren and has been in 4 houses in my family before mine. The band teacher at my hometown school told my mother years ago that it was an excellent piano. Can you tell me how to find out how old it is? I know it was made before 1938, and that's all. I appreciate any help. Lisa

comment: I came to this website inadvertantly looking for the value of the speed of sound. It is an interesting site! I did find what might be an error on this page: http://www.uk-piano.org/sound.htmlIt shows a very high figure for gold versus lead and steel, and that value drops off dramatically at 100 C & 200 C I think the value at 20 degrees C is possibly an error. Thank You

Straight-strung, overdamped. The harp is painted green and embossed "Silver Medal Inventions Exhibition", and "3/4 Vert 25 FG". Bottom two keys inscribed "8959". Please, have you any ideas? Thanks. comment: Just moved into a house we are renting. The landlord received the piano as a hand-me-down. It has a brass plate on the front that reads "Classes of 1911" It also has a plate on the back that reads "Board of Education" with some numbers. I was just wondering where I could find out more info about "Smith and Barnes" pianos and where I can go to get hammers and strings if need be to restore it. Some of the keys are also missing their original ivory. Any help would be appreciated!! Kim :-)

===================================================================

The company was established in1872 They seemed to stop making pianos in 1920 The pianos were made in Clybourn Chicago. They first went under the name of Smith - Barnes & Stroeber in 1884 the name became Smith and Barnes. The Board of Education bit I would think that the piano spend some time in school.

As to getting hammers and strings unless you are doing it your self the person who is restoring the piano will have them made to pattern. However, before you start spending any money on the piano I would get a local piano tuner in to tell you if it is worth doing first.

Hope this is of some help

Barrie,

comment: I am inquiring about a piano that has been in our family since the 1930's. The information that I have is that it was manufactured as the "Model Piano" by the Simpson Piano Co. in the UK in the 1820's. It was marketed in the USA by the New York Piano Company. It is believed to be the piano or its twin once owned by Mary Todd Lincoln in the White House. Any direction to find information on this piano would be appreciated. Thank you. Ethan Saliba
