Doug has taught me piano for around 6 years but when, 2 years ago, I mentioned that I would no longer be continuing with my clarinet lessons at school he offered to carry on my tuition. Doug had already given me a lot of help and support for my most recent clarinet exam – grade 6 – as I had felt that the lessons at school might not be long enough to enable me to advance my ability on the instrument. I felt that thanks to his innovative, patient and above all enjoyable approach to teaching my standard of playing improved substantially and thus allowed me to achieve a high pass with merit at grade 6. Although Doug did not actually accompany me for the exam we were able to make recordings of the piano accompaniment and these helped me greatly with practise at home.
Doug’s tuition and support helped me further for my grade 7 clarinet exam, this time both as a teacher and as an accompanist. I found Doug’s tuition extremely valuable as he helped me work through the pieces and engage with the music. He was an excellent accompanist for the exam and actually made playing the pieces in front of an examiner highly enjoyable! Although Doug and I prepared for this exam in advance, his ability as a pianist I am sure would not prevent from playing pieces at very short notice and as such I highly recommend him.
