James Brotherston
James is a talented young Scottish pianist who has has recently moved to London after an active nine years spent on the Edinburgh live music scene. His style combines traditional New Orleans-style blues piano with some of the jazz stride form popularised by Fats Waller and others; he cites some of his pianistic influences as Dr. John, Charles Brown, and Professor Longhair. Having started his music career playing with now-legendary student soul revue Big Henry's Soul Cats, James went on to found his own highly-regarded R&B band in 2001, The Hustlers, who launched their latest mini-album 'Succour For Suckers' to local critical acclaim in Feb 2006. An experienced bandleader, songwriter and arranger, he is now in demand as a solo entertainer and session player in both Edinburgh and London. James has also composed soundtracks for short films, worked as an accompanist for a gospel choir, and held residencies at the Living Room bar and the prestigious Cosmo restaurant in Edinburgh.
