Hi,
Calling from Cairns Australia. We are about to be given an upright piano and would love to know how old this piano is.
I have searched your site and others to no avail. The owner tells me it has been with her for 40 yrs but was second hand when she got it so does not know the real age.

The name on the front says "Feurich Leipzig" and there is a badging below saying "Nicholson & Co Limited". There is a number under the hood as such which is 87174 and another at foot height inside on the steel cross overs 8683M.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated as this piano needs a well overdue service and we would like to know perhaps how particular we should be.

Nicholson was an Australian agent importing Feurich and others. I don't thinmk they have a hood, is there a number visible inside the top? 87174 is too high for an old Feurich, serial numbers wouldn't end in M, and individual serial numbers are not cast into the iron frames, which are made in quantity. We have taken another look at the piano and it is not 87174. It is 27174. There is a gold coloured emblem inside that says "Schutz Marke Julius Feurich Leipzig" and behind the strings, printed on the fabric is "Julius Feurich Kaisorl und konigl hof-pianoforte fabrik leipzig".

Does this give you an more of an idea, specifically the 27174?

The number suggests 1912. If you know how to remove the action safely ( the working parts of the notes) it may be marked with the action maker's name and number, and this may confirm the date.
