I recentley picked up a John Brinsmead piano with the serial number: 5581 , it also has the address:no.4 wigmore street, cavendish square, london, and a medal awarded 1862"improvement in action and general excellence of pianos" and "patent trichord improved",...My question is,...can anyone tell me when my piano was made?,..and how long were pianos manufactured by John Brinsmead, before the "& sons" came into play?

I figure it was made in roughly 1863...

I've been all over the net, including that site, but am unable to match the serial number with any certain year,...and the address is not mentioned anywhere either,...thanks for your time.

First off that site is this site .The early published numbers are out

You say your piano says Cavendish Square In 1870 they were at Cavendish Square. London. They also became John Brinsmead and Sons in 1870 you also say medal awarded 1862 so it is going to be after 1862 However, if it is a John Brinsmead then it will be before 1870 the other problem is 4 Wigmore street I can not find any records of number 4 - 18 yes but again 1870 before 1870 they were in 1 Little Torrington Street. London.
1868 32 Charlotte Street. London. However, the numbers for 1870 were around 13361 is your piano a John Brinsmead or a John Brinsmead and Sons

The number suggests 1864, they were probably at 4 Wigmore street by 1863, and certainly by 1865, I have an ad of theirs. Does it mention the 1867 medal?

Then ir could be as early as 1862 or as late as 1867, but probably circa 1864. Do you have any photos you could email me? I'd be interested to compare it with others.

I think it is fair to say that the date has been pinned down more accurately than most, and one must bear in mind that pianos could be stockpiled in the factories for 2 or 3 years, and then remain in the retail shop for a similar period, so dating is never precise. I can help further by quoting for printing general information on the Brinsmead firms, or by compiling a report from photos, but I would require much more complete interior shots for this.
