Hello there, I recently received a Bord upright piano with the serial number 27480 ... and I was wondering approximately how old it might be, and is there anywhere I could find out more about it's history.
Thanks .. Paul.

1870-75, according to my Pierce's Atlas, but that was yesterday when I looked it up and my memory isn't all it could be... I don't think there's a history of Bord pianos per se, but they get a favourable mention in Cyril Ehrlich's book, The Piano. He mentions one which was dragged across continents by a travelling circus for years, then rebuilt then sold to a bordello in Paris, and notes its remarkable longevity despite being full of cigar butts... In my experience they go on for years and years with little interference other than tuning, as long as they aren't parked next to a radiator or anything silly!

Wow, that's older that I thought it might be. Thank you so much for this information. Paul.

There have been problems with the dates published for Bord pianos, but there is no way of checking them, unless the piano is dated inside. Have a look in case there is more than one number.
