Hello, I am buying a rather battered Sames 'upright iron grand', and I would like to replace the missing sconces / candleholders. I would be very grateful indeed for any information on what kind of sconces I should get - ornate or plain? gold-coloured brass or silver-coloured brass? curvy or angular? single or double? Do they fold away to the sides or are they rigid? Any information, or ideas on where to look for it, would be fantastic. I gather that William Sames pianos were produced in Birmingham in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. Many thanks and best wishes,

I can see the wisdom in posting this item on its own, as well as under the maker's name, but I feel that you are heading for a cul-de-sac here, because sconces were not standard for a given model, some customers chose designs that suited them, or chose from a selection, so although I have many pictuires of sconces, it will not be possible to know which type was used on your piano, and even if you find a type that looks right in a picture, it is unlikely that you will be able to obtain a particular design anywhere. All I can say is that piano sconces are almost always swivelled sideways, brass, and quite fancy designs. They may be double, but single is more common.
