I have an upright by T.G.Payne-London (maker's name cast in iron frame), serial number 24243. Have you any information about the maker and can you suggest what date 24243 might have been made ? Thanks

Hi! T. & G. Payne were established in London in 1891, and became a limited company around 1906. They had various addresses in Fortress Road, and moved to nearby Kentish Town Road in the early thirties. Their serial numbers are not published, but I have some rough dates: I could compile a report based on photos, but your best bet is to look at "Datemarks" on the PianoGen website first.

Hi, did you find anything out about your piano? I live in New Zealand and own the same type. My serial number and date seem different though. I have a trangular in-colour date mark with what looks like a picture of the sodiac in the middle, then the letters: MDCCCXCI along one side of the triangle with the words T. G. Payne and established along the opposite sides. If you did find anything more about your piano, or if you know any good websites, I love to hear from either of you.

This particular Payne, T.& G. Payne, was established in London, 1892, not 1891. Circa 1906, They became a limited company. By the thirties, they had moved to Kentish Town.
