I have recently purchased a Yamaha upright serial # W3125223.

It is in good condition. However, I was unable to get any detail on this series on the internet. Could somebody knowledgeable in this field kindly advise:
- the specialities of this W series if any
- when and where they were made
- why were they discountinued
- do they have any generic defects or shortcomings

Yamaha uses several prefixes to their serial numbers, usually indicating where the paino was made. I've come across "T" - Thomaston, Georgia, "U" - South Haven, Michigan and "N" - Kembles, Milton Keynes. Although I have heard of "G" and "W" prefixes, I have yet to find our what they mean. No prefix ususally indicates a Japanese origin, although Chinese "Eterna" and Indonesian pianos also lack the prefix.

If this piano was made in Japan, it is likely to have been built in 1980

I think the "W" is simply a series number. No Yamaha factory other than Hamamatsu has passed the 3 million mark yet, so you're right in that it's from 1980.

Maybe it's a Walnut finish? I recall some (rare) U1s and U3s finished in Walnut, so maybe it's a U1W.
