I am interested in the foloowing private sale: Steinway upright 1882, serial 49081. Restored in 2007 with black poly case, new Kilnke tuning pins, new bass/treble strings Heller/Roslau, new hammers, new whippens, hammer shanks, new felts.
I live in a ground floor flat with no neighbours. My room is small 10ft x 10ft with high ceilings. I would like to know if anyone has an opinion about this instrument which is for sale by aprivate seller for £6900. I would also like to know if this instument might be too loud for such a space. The photos of the piano are excellent. I intend to view it once I have received some replies. Many thanks. Alastair.

It's very big.

It's very old.

The actions are a nightmare, so make sure the regulation's up to scratch and there's life in the action components.

I would rather have a new Kemble Conservatoire than an ancient Steinway. Just my opinion, but it may be shared by others. It'd save a chunk of cash too.

Old S&S uprights don't share the reputation of the grands.

A 1930s model V or K and things start to get very interesting indeed, but the old ones are secretly hated by the trade and with good reason.

I'd be interested to hear if you like the old rebuilt one. The equipment tally sounds a bit Polski to me, and as the forum knows, I don't like Polish rebuilds unless there's a good deal of British input in the finishing.
