I have recently inherited a Knake baby grand which I believe was originally owned by my great, great uncle who was Premier, Administrator and Leiutenant Governor of Queensland, Australia at various times between 1870 and 1896. I understand the piano was purchased sometime during the 19th century in Germany and shipped to Australia.

My Mother has owned and often played the piano for more than the past 60 years.

The QueenslandDepartment of Premier and Cabinet has advised me that the Queensland consrvatorium of Music Museum, the Queensland Parliament or Government House may be interested in receiving the piano as a gift to the State. They are keen to know as much as possible about the piano's history.

I have read in previous forums that the Knake began in 1808 in Munster, Germany and does not have serial numbers. This fits with my experience.

Below is all I have been able to find in the piano:

Knake Munster / W

D. R. Patent for England, France, Austria and Hungary. (written in German)

Gegrundet 1808 Gebruder Knake A. G.

Inside the piano is a gold shield including two lions and a cross.

Its dimensions are 1.46 metres wide, 1.46 metres deep and .95metres high.

I would be grateful for any advice on the piano's history, or where I may be able to fine another forum or someone who can assist.

Thanks and regards.
