BiographyNing Pookhaothong made his concerto debut at the age of fifteen with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ovchinikov, after winning the prestigious National Piano Competition of Thailand. The performance secured the sponsorship of the Thai Airways, BMW, Toshiba, the Bangkok Bank as well as a Royal Scholarship from Her Majesty the Queen Sririkit, which enabled him to study in the UK. Ning studied at the Royal College of Music and the Trinity College of Music in London. He was a recipient of the coveted Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Scholarship at the Royal College of Music, as well as winning major prizes for solo piano such as the Joy Scott, Kendal Taylor, Gladys Puttick and Weingarten Prizes. These prizes were awarded for the performances of Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann and for the Art of Improvisation. The Ian Fleming Trust awarded him scholarships in 1998 and 1999, the Myra Hess award was made in 1999. Ning Pookhaothong has given numerous concerts as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber music player in the UK, Russia, the United States, Japan, Austria and Thailand. His performance venues have included the Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, South Bank Centre and St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Thailand Cultural Centre and the Goethe Institute and he has recently toured Northeast England. His playing is frequently heard on radio in Thailand, BBC World Service and has been invited to give lecture recitals and masterclasses at Mahidol College of Music in Bangkok.
