Darren Leaper graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire in 2006 after studying piano with Simon Nicholls. As a child he studied organ, becoming the youngest person in the UK to gain the LGSMD recital certificate (hons) for electronic organ. He later turned to classical piano as his main focus, becoming the winner of the David Brookes piano prize whilst an undergraduate at the Conservatoire.
Darren has performed at the Birmingham Symphony Hall for their ‘Art of Piano’ event and in 2005 he recorded live for BBC radio 3’s ‘Discovering Music’ program, in which he performed on the modern Steinway and a 19th century fortepiano. In both these events he worked with the distinguished British pianist David Owen-Norris. He has also performed in master classes for some of the most internationally acclaimed pianists and pedagogues, including Mikhail Kazakevich, Peter Hill and Daniel Hoexter. His performance career has seen him recently return from a serires of concerts in mainland China with the remarkable Chinese pianist Xi Xi, in which he performed both solo and duet repertoire.
Darren is based in the Midlands, working as an accompanist and soloist for recitals and examinations. He is also a private piano and music theory tutor, and works part time as a sessional pianist for the Birmingham Music Service and a music tutor for Yamaha Music Schools. Darren offers expert tuition for advanced players preparing for examinations and auditions, as well as providing enjoyable lessons for beginners and those who want to play for pleasure.
