Learning to play any musical instrument is generally thought to be a highly beneficial activity in many ways. The discipline learned through the effort of practice, the physical coordination of fingers and arms, the interpretation of musical notation, and above all the enjoyment and fulfilment of successfully playing a piece of music by oneself or in a group - these are all aspects of learning a musical instrument that are richly rewarding in themselves and can have a positive implications on other areas of our lives. For children the balance of skills and the sense of achievement gained through learning an instrument can be a real confidence builder, and the benefits can often be seen in schoolwork also. For adults it can be the chance to realise a forgotten or neglected ambition (if the number of people who approach me and say 'I've always wanted to play the piano' is anything to go by).
If you or your child is a beginner, I will guide you through the process of learning the notes of the piano and how to read musical notation in a clear and logical way. You will learn some appealing and memorable tunes and I will play along with you most of the time in lessons so you gain confidence quickly and also learn to play in a musical way.
If you have played the piano before then I can help you back into piano playing by finding an appropriate motivation and then helping you achieve your goal. It may be you just want to be able to play that piece you never quite mastered, you want to play a certain pop song that you like, or maybe you want to achieve the next grade. Whatever the reason for wanting to play again, I can show you how to practise effectively so that you really make progress and teach you the technique to make it seem easy. I teach all styles of playing including classical, pop and jazz (including improvisation) and will always endeavour to tailor lessons to each individual pupil's needs, while maintaining an emphasis on good technique and effective practice. I currently teach part-time for Sandwell LEA and Birmingham LEA and am fully CRB checked.
