Ellie Verkerk
BMus(Hons) from the Royal College of Music
*I am also listed in the Entertainers and Accompanists section within the Hampshire / Farnborough sections*
Professionally trained from the age of 10, and teaching / accompanying from 12 years old, I studied at the Royal College of Music for 12 years, graduating in 2001. I currently earn my living as a freelance musician, working as an accompanist, rehearsal pianist, entertainer and Musical Director.
A committed teacher, I am dedicated and supportive to my students. Teaching at my home, my aim is to motivate and inspire, encouraging them to reach their maximum potential and to enjoy playing. I am happy teaching any style, from classical to jazz, pop and musical theatre.
As a performing musician, I am always happy to talk about how to develop a successful career in music, and can offer work experience in all areas. Where possible, I always encourage my students to work with / accompany other musicians, in order to broaden their musical knoweldge and awareness.
During lessons I look in detail at technique, interpretation, analysis and musicality, challenging my students to think in small detail about what / how and why they are playing in a certain way, and how they can improve upon it.
A typical lesson would cover scales, studies, repertoire, and listening to extracts of music from my extensive CD collection.
Consultation lessons can be arranged if desired.
I only teach students from Gr5 upwards, and can also provide aural training.
Outgoing, supportive, passionate and friendly, please contact me for further details. I am a member of the Musicians Union and have been CRB checked.
QUOTES REGARDING MY TEACHING & PLAYING
“As a piano teacher, Ellie has encouraged my daughter and given her a new love of the piano and music. She is inspiring both as a teacher and as a performer, and makes the lessons fun, while maintaining a 'learning' environment. Ellie adapts to the situation and preferred learning styles of the indiviual. She encourages her pupils to work out what they are trying to achieve, where they need to improve, and to give them goals. She instils confidence and is a great encourager.” Penny N, mother to a private pupil
“I find the lessons fun, and I come away enthusiastic about playing piano. I’m encouraged to ask questions, and I like the way Ellie helps me interpret the music.” Anna - private student
“I’m so proud of her! We hit a milestone this weekend, when she was doing some homework and used playing the piano as a relaxation break. I was so impressed with Anna’s rendition of Ballade, with beautiful variations in intensity and tempo. For now, it’s just so blissful to have her wonderful music in the house.” Paul B, a parent of one of my pupils upon asking him how he thought his daughter had progressed since commencing lessons with me
“A terrific talent. Terrific energy. [You] have magic in your fingers”
