Diana's Music Class
Ph.D., M.Mus (Music Education) P.G.C.E., B.Mus (Piano Performance)
Thank you for your interest in piano or keyboard lessons. Diana’s Music Class in south Birmingham, offers a wealth of experience and information for beginners or those who have been playing for a few years; whether students are five years of age or entering the third age (retirement). Time should be set aside for regular daily practice without distractions. Lessons are normally 30 minutes and designed to optimize each student’s individual learning experience, through the use of a variety of teaching and learning techniques (audio, visual, kinaesthetic, rote, discovery). Personal opinions and preferences are taken into consideration when making recommendations, but a varied syllabus is offered including popular classics, folk, sacred hymns, jazz, seasonal. In order to develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning, students will be encouraged to develop listening and composition skills, as well as memorization, playing by ear (work out how to play music you know, without notation) music theory, sight-reading, improvisation, aural training and singing. Lessons should not be viewed in isolation from other activities, but should be a part of the student’s musical world connected to music on television programs, radio, local concerts etc. Students should be enthusiastic and actively participate in other musical activities as well as listening to and reading about music. Students may be prepared and entered for examination using the new Trinity Guildhall syllabus or ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).
