I teach piano and flute from home to Grade 8 from 5 to 95 and can also undertake Grade 5 theory tuition.
I believe in a relaxed and friendly approach to teaching in that I do not push exams and "classical music", but through encouraging the pupil to enjoy their lessons and practise using their own music, I have often had success where a more formal approach has failed.
I do encourage the taking of some exams because I believe it provides a target for the pupil; however, this can just mean studying to the required level and not taking the actual exam if the pupil is particularly nervous of examination situations.
Lessons should be enjoyable and inform you not just about the music you are learning, but include how your instrument works and the history of the composer and the time in which the piece was written, where relevent.
