Comparison of Temperaments

Equal Temperament divides the octave into 12 equal semitones, each spaced at a ratio of 1.05946 (being the 12th root of an octave, 2). It was propounded by Mersenne in 1636 and came into use in the late 18th century. It is not the same as Well-Temperament, made famous by Bach, despite what some more superficial texts might say.
