I need to clear some space, so am sadly selling this really nice Challen which has been in my family for over 30 years. It is a 1950s upright, although a piano 'expert' who tuned it once said he reckoned the mechanism, which is a cast iron overstrung one, may have been from an older instrument. It stays in tune really, really well, and is at concert pitch. It would need tuned before serious use, as it was last tuned 2 years ago. It has a lovely round, full sound, and a "Vibration Resonator" casework which accentuates the sound with the lid up. The touch is medium to heavy, but easy enough to play (I was 7 when we got it!) A nice dark wood finish which is in pretty good condition. I will also throw in the slightly tatty duet stool with it. This has oodles of storage for sheet music.

There are a few marks on the varnish finish, mainly on the keyboard lid, but otherwise the varnish finish is in good condition. The underside of the piano lid is marked with 'Muirfield, London', though I've never been able to find anything about this make. It is also annotated with 'J.L.Haworth & Co, Accrington', which I presume is the name of an original supplier of the piano, rather than anything to do with the make. It was inherited from a grandparent, but is now being displaced by another family heirloom. The piano is overstrung, underdamped. The price includes the stool shown in the picture. The piano has been in my family since 1985 and has been played regularly till 3 years ago, but has now become redundant. This well known model was one of the better small Grands made in the early-mid 20th century with quality English construction and craftmanship and makes for an excellent small instrument. The case is in dark mahogany. It has a few minor scratches and the polish on the corner exposed to the light has dulled. The piano features the 'Tuplex' double metal frame, still in undimmed gold colour, a beautiful piece of metal craftsmanship, and a reason by itself to leave the large, hinging mahogany lid open on its stand for prominent display. Below some information about the company that produced it. The Imperial Organ & Piano Company, Ltd., was a successful English manufacturer from the early to middle 20th Century. The firm was established in London in 1902, and was the successor of the “Collins Organ & Piano Company”. The firm was most productive in the ‘teens and ‘twenties, and their factory was located at 45 – 47 Ellingford Road & Mare Street, London. The Imperial Organ & Piano Company was known for building very elaborate, high quality instruments which were often quite expensive compared to other contemporary manufactures. The firm built a full line of upright and baby grand pianos, as well as a variety of organs for both home and church use. They also built two-manual reed organs, as well as two-manual and pedal board reed organs. During the 1930s, Imperial built a limited number of instruments called the “Pianorgan”, a piano and reed organ combined in one instrument. Imperial continued operation until the late 1960s. The front also is removable for tuning (please see photos) the clips to open this are accessable from the top of the piano. To the left of the tuning pegs is a small white plague which reads: Supplied by Harrods Ltd, London. No. H 46599. The piano has 2 foot pedals only. I am unsure of age of piano but I suspect it to be in the region of 50 years. Selling because I need the room. Will need to be tuned. Buyer to Collect. P.S... A rare piano. Reinhold & Schrother made pianos in Berlin between 1914 and 1930. It is a handsome piece of furniture with a walnut case in very good condition and it plays well. The serial number is 1635 and it was probably made in the 1920's.

At the 1851 London Exhibition Robert Wornum & Sons exhibited cottage uprights, and downstriking bichord semi-grand and square pianos.[73] Their Albion semi-grand was noted as a good example of how the downstriking action allowed for a simpler and more economical construction without metallic bracing,[18] and they were awarded a prize medal for their improved piccolo piano—placing them after Erard, of Paris and London, who won the council medal for pianos, and at the same level as twenty-two other piano manufacturers, including Broadwood & Sons of London, Schiedmayer & Sohne, Stuttgart, Pape, Paris, and Jonas Chickering, Boston.[74] Robert Wornum died on September 29, 1852[75] after a short illness.[76] He was succeeded by his son Alfred Nicholson Wornum.[77] The firm exhibited at the 1855 Exposition Universelle[78] but failed to win an award.[79] In 1856 A. N. Wornum patented improvements to downstriking actions with a spring to keep the crank lever in constant contact with the key, as well as a new arrangement for the regulating button to allow easier adjustment and a method for improving repetition with a spring,[80] and in 1862 patented further improvements with the aim of rendering the action very compact by moving the dampers below the hammers and operating them by projections attached at the far ends of the escapement levers. He also claimed a pivoting stand for square pianos in order for them to swing up and out of the way when not in use.[81] Robert Wornum & Sons exhibited cottage and grand pianos as well as their "folding" square at the 1862 International Exhibition in London,[82] receiving a medal for "novelty of invention in piano"—one of almost seventy piano manufacturers to receive a prize medal including Broadwood, L. Boesendorfer of Vienna, Pleyel, Wolff & Cie, Paris, and Steinway & Sons, New York.[83] They exhibited a piccolo upright, as well as moderately priced downstriking grand and square pianos without metal bracings at the 1867 Universal Exposition in Paris,[84] where they were awarded a bronze medal,[85] at the same level as J. Brinsmead of London, J. Promberger, Vienna, and Hornung & Moeller, Copenhagen, among others, but below the level of most of the manufacturers judged to be their equals in previous exhibitions. In 1866 A. N. Wornum patented methods of extending sounding boards beyond the wrestplank bridge in uprights and downstriking grands, which he claimed would improve their higher notes,[86] and patented improvements in grands in 1870.[87] Earlier that year Robert Wornum & Sons had advertised that their "new patent construction" allowed a reduction of over 100 guineas in the price of their grand pianos, as well as insuring "a full, sweet tone and an elastic touch",[88] and by 1871 the firm offered four sizes between 5 feet 6 inches (168cm) and 8 feet 6 inches (259cm) on the new plan, priced between 56 and 96 guineas ($260 to $450).[89] A reporter for the Journal of the Society of Arts on the Second Annual International Exhibition held in London in 1872, however, described the tone of the wooden frame pianos the firm displayed as "sweet, but hardly full or forcible enough."[90] A. N. Wornum patented further improvements in grands in 1875, introducing hammers with reversed orientation in order to permit longer strings relative to the size of the piano,[91] and the firm displayed short ("under six foot") and full size ("8 feet") "Iron Grand Pianofortes" on this plan, along with a piccolo upright at the 1878 Universal Exposition in Paris,[92] for which they were awarded a silver medal.[93] This placed them again at the same level as Brinsmead (though this firm's founder was awarded the medal of the Legion of Honor on the same occasion[94]), as well as Kriegelstein, Paris and Charles Stieff, Baltimore.[95] Hipkins wrote in the article on Wornum in the 1889 volume of the Dictionary of Music and Musicians that "[t]he present head of the firm of Robert Wornum & Sons is Mr. A. N. Wornum, who has succeeded to his grandfather's inventive talent."[4] According to Frank Kidson the firm was "still an important one in the pianoforte trade" in early 1900,[96] but Harding lists this year as their last entry in the London directories as piano manufacturers.[97]

This lovely looking piano is overstrung, in good condition and has been regularly tuned over the years. However, it would need tuning now as it hasn't been used regularly for a year. W148cm x H120cm x D65cm. Some of the white keys have very small chips on their tips but the piano still plays well.

Fazer piano made in white oak, excellant condition and recently tuned. We bought this piano from a family member a year ago but none of our 3 children are making much use of it and are keen to learn other instruments....so we are selling it. It was tuned recently, is in great condition and, I believe from a pianist friend, would make a wonderful piano for somebody and should not be sat gathering dust in a living room. It comes with a stool that I recovered (original velvet still beneath the upholstery) and has been well looked after.We would like to sell quickly, so have gone for a low price.
